Description
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) has a long history of traditional use by herbalists dating back more than 2000 years. St. John’s wort is a plant with yellow, star-shaped flowers and five petals that is native to Europe, North and South America. St John’s Wort has been extensively researched and studies have shown support for mood balance, emotional calm and mild to moderate depression. St. John’s wort is most commonly used for mild to moderate depression and conditions that sometimes go along with depression such as anxiety, tiredness, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping. Studies have also shown SJW to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. The main active chemicals in SJW are hypericin and hyperforin – these give the herb most of its efficacy, targeting chemical messengers in the brain such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
